How Quality Plumbing Can Actually Save You Money

As the old saying goes, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Regular inspections can help you catch irregularities before they become emergencies. Here are some ways that quality plumbing can actually save you money.

One of the easiest ways to save money is by simply replacing old fixtures with new ones. Newer fixtures like toilets and showerheads are often equipped with a “low-water” or “eco-friendly” option and newer faucets tend to have higher quality seals to prevent leaks. Not to mention, a dripping faucet can waste up to 180 gallons of water per month!

Another interesting approach to save money is by insulating your pipes. Yep, you heard right. Keep those pipes warm! The typical American home wastes up to 750 gallons per month just waiting for the shower to heat up. That can add up to as much as 15% of your annual heating costs! Having insulated pipes not only cuts the wait time in half, but also the heating bill.

Do I Really Need a Plumber?

We all want to save ourselves the money and hassle of calling in the professionals. Luckily, there are a few plumbing issues that you can manage yourself. Let's take a look at the number one most common plumbing issue that's DIY friendly.

Does your toilet sound like it's been running longer than usual? Let's take a look at some reasons why your toilet isn't flushing properly. First, remove the lid from the tank of the toilet. Take a look inside. There are three main parts: the fill valve, the flapper, and the float.

First, let's look at the fill valve. The fill valve is the plastic center cylinder that moves vertically up and down along the shaft. The fill valve often gets stuck due to mineral build up. Simply turn off the water to the toilet and flush to drain the tank. Then, get a rag and bathroom cleaner to clean the shaft, moving the cylinder up and down to expose any hidden mineral sediment. Once the cylinder can move freely, turn on the water to toilet and let the tank refill with water.

Next is the flapper. The flapper is the rubber stopper located at the bottom of the tank. It should be connected to the toilet handle by a chain. Simply wiggle it around until it seals. If it's still leaking water even though it looks sealed, it might need replacing.

And finally, the float. The float is the black ball which is connected to a metal rod. Not all toilets have this. Sometimes it just falls off the hinges. Just make sure everything is connected properly so that the float can freely move up and down.
